Freegal is a fantastic service, but there is so much available, we provide patron and staff playlists to help you find something great to download. We'll cover everything from classical to country. For more info on the service, jump to our previous post. You can find previous playlists on the blog or jump over to our Pinterest board. To access the library of available music, you will need your Edwardsville barcode and PIN. Scroll to the bottom of our webpage, click on the Freegal link, and away you go! Please be advised that an an entire album will require multiple downloads (patrons are currently allowed 3/week).
We recognize that the search functions are not easy to use in Freegal - please be patient. If we've listed something here, it should be available. Some staff favorites can not yet be found on Freegal, but are available through SHARE. We will clearly indicate these albums/songs and add a link to our catalog.
This series of artists/albums falls into the jazz/blues/folk category. Pretty diverse, but so are our staff.
Amanda E. recommends Nina Simone. "I listen to this when I'm driving at night. Start with a greatest hits album and keep your ears out for The Other Woman (found on Black Gold, also on Freegal). She has a smoky, strong voice and her dynamics can bring on goose bumps."
Judy T. recommends Diana Krall. " I listen to this whenever I listen to jazz, which is frequently. My favorite from this album is Let's Fall In Love. Other great selections are I've Got You Under My Skin and Peel Me A Grape (both available through SHARE). I like jazz very much and she offers a little 'lighter touch' on many of the classics."
Joyce D. recommends Laura Nyro. "I listen to this when I want variety." She performs a variety of musical styles - not only her own songs but songs written by musicians such as Gerry Goffin, Carole King, Richard Rogers, Lorenz Hurt and George & Ira Gershwin. Four albums are available on Freegal, The Essential Laura Nyro, Stoned Soul Picnic, Season of Lights and Eli And The Thirteenth Confession." Joyce's favorite album is Angel In The Dark, available through SHARE.
Judy T. also recommends Ella Fitzgerald, a favorite when cooking. Some of her favorite songs are Mack the Knife, Moonlight in Vermont, How High The Moon and Mountain Greenely. A good album to try is Thanks For the Memories: The Voice of Elegance, a two CD set of remastered classics. All are available on Freegal.
