Learning at the Library: Back to School Classes

Perhaps the kids are heading back to class and you feel a bit wistful for your own school days.  Or perhaps you think you need to brush up on some basics to help the kids with homework.  Either way, Universal Class, one of our on-line services, is a great solution. Spelling 101  (1.5 Continuing Education Units)  This course will teach you how to avoid misspelling by recognizing spelling errors quickly.  We'll review not only the basic rules of spelling but also the most common spelling "trouble spots.


Basic Math 101 (1.0 Continuing Education Units)  Learn to really understand addition, multiplication, division; know how to calculate and move among decimals, fractions, and percents; figure out ratios and proportions like a pro; and learn to use a calculator for basic math functions.


Essay Writing 101  (1.1 Continuing Education Units)  This course will examine he nature, history, and structure of essays; the various types of essays; and provide a refresher course in English grammar, focusing on the parts of speech and rules for good syntax.  Furthermore, examples will be provided of both good and poor writing, as well as common mistakes to avoid.

Building Children's Reading Skills (1.1 Continuing Education Units)  This course will provide the learner with a better understanding of the underlying concepts needed to improve the reading skills in children and adults.  Through readings, lessons, quizzes and independent explorations, the learner will leave the course with more complete understanding of the development of reading skills from preschool through adulthood.
