Superb Science Kits, Part 2

Posted by Youth Staff

With school ending and summer fast approaching, keep in mind that the Youth Library has a large collection of science kits that can be checked out for children ages 6 and up. Each of these kits are sure to keep you and your kids engaged and learning new things.  Some of them will have you taking trips outside to explore nature and others are perfect for really hot days or when it's raining outside.   We have such a large collection of science kits that we'll be discussing them in more than one post. Click on the kit titles to go to our catalog and place a hold.

Goldie Blox is a series of interactive books and construction toys starring Goldie, a curious girl with a love of engineering. Goldie's stories encourage girls to build, developing the spatial still that are fundamental to engineering. As she goes on adventures with her friends, she comes across problems that she solves by building simple machines. While the story unfolds, girls get to build what Goldie builds. The kit helps build spatial skills, engineering principles, and confidence in problem-solving in a fun and creative way. This kit comes equipped with 9 design ideas, a DIY project, 34 building pieces and a Parade Float storybook.

Goldie Blox is a toy company out to inspire the next generation of female engineers. As it stands, only 11% of engineers in the US are women, even though engineering and tech are two of the fastest growing fields in job creation.  Engineers are literally builders and designers of our world; from the products we use, to the way we communicate, to the cities we inhabit. Gender equality in these fields will provide the balance and innovations that we all need to thrive; the female perspective is indeed a valuable one. Girls are losing interest in math and science as young as age 8. Research shows that the earlier kids get interested in math and science, the more likely they are to go into these fields as adults.

With over 185 projects, this innovative kit provides your child with the opportunity to explore both sound and electronics.  Projects include an Optical Theremin, Echo effects, a Voice changer…plus you can record your own voice or music!  Try connecting the unit to your smart phone and analyze sounds with downloadable apps.  All parts snap together with ease, and the kit includes a full-color manual with easy to follow instructions.  As an added bonus, the Snap Circuits Sound kit also includes a book titled What are Electrical Circuits? by Ronald Moore.  Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Learn about astronomy, grids, planets, constellations, and much more with the Star Planetarium kit that turns your home into a star theater with its bright halogen light. This toy comes with an activity guide for hours of play. It's like being in a real planetarium. Set the constellation to view and season, month, day and hour. Includes book, Stars and Constellations.
