Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson
The debut novel by Helen Simonson follows Major Ernest Pettigrew and his unexpected friendship with Mrs. Jasmina Ali, a Pakistani shopkeeper from his local village. They are mourning the death of family (he a brother, she her husband), and both share a love of good books. Although in the beginning it seems these are the only two things linking the two characters, as their friendship develops, we see they have much more in common. The plot encompasses family relationships, prejudice and the importance of love.
"This was a charming story from beginning to end. Many colorful characters."
"Thumbs up to Major Pettigrew!"
"A gentle love story about a 'country curmeudgeon' and a lovely Pakistani widow - and yet so much richer than that! This debut author is someone to watch."
